Afghanistan Vows of Retaliation After Deadly Pakistani Attacks
The strikes took place overnight on Saturday in the eastern provinces of Nangarhar and Paktika. According to Afghanistan’s Defense Ministry, “various civilian areas” were targeted, including a religious school and private homes. Among the casualties were women and children, with multiple others reported injured.
The ministry condemned the attacks, calling them “a breach of international law and the principles of good neighborliness.” It added, “We hold the Pakistani military responsible for targeting civilians and religious sites. We will respond to these attacks in due course with a measured and appropriate response.”
Pakistan justified the operation as a “retributive response” to a recent suicide bombing, including one at a Shiite place of worship earlier this month that claimed at least 31 lives and left nearly 170 wounded. The Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP) has claimed responsibility for that attack.
